Contemporary Issues In Native America

This is a social studies class and we will be looking at contemporary issues in the Native American community from a sociological perspective. Problems we will be studying include language and culture loss, identity issues, language revitalization movements, drugs, crime, gangs, racism and stereotypes in the media, and the current conditions of Native Americans off and on the reservation. Students will also study topics such as decolonization and critical race theory. There will be an emphasis on reading and discussion in class. Guest speakers, lectures and videos will enhance the class. Students will be expected to write a research paper in the class.
